The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Main duties will include those described below, which will be carried out during normal working hours.
Familiarity with office productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to prepare research reports on the work performed.
The IPD Lab Manager must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance and familiar with BSL1 and BSL2 requirements.
This role will provide management support for IPD satellite sites: Ben Hall, HSB J-Wing, and SLU S Building. This will include working with vendors on all supplies, equipment, and service needs
~25% of effort will be dedicated to supervising the daily activities of 1 laboratory support staff and undergraduate support staff
Assist in the hiring and training of a new lab support staff
Daily supervision and assignment of tasks
~25% of effort will be dedicated to tracking & ordering inventory, and anticipating & avoiding supply shortcomings/backordering.
The IPD Lab Manager will be responsible for ensuring proper reagent stocks and consumables are available.
Anticipating and ordering acceptable alternatives for backordered/unavailable items as needed
~10% of effort will be dedicated to negotiating with biotech & other vendors with prices for supplies and services
Setup of complex “buy and hold” strategies with vendors for select items, negotiation of discounts, and entry into purchasing system. Will negotiate with vendors to warehouse and ship our supplies at standard intervals with deduct and hold order & standing orders. These are critical to maintaining laboratory supplies while reducing our space needs.
~15% of effort will be dedicated to coordinating lab space usage.
Ensuring that cold storage & common-use spaces are organized & maintained, while working with other laboratory stakeholders to ensure good laboratory citizenship.
~15% of effort will be dedicated to large equipment maintenance management (e.g. service contracts) and distributed collaborative support among other stakeholders in the lab
Negotiation with biotech companies (with help from other lab members) with prices for services and equipment.

~10% of effort will be dedicated to orientation of new lab members.
Request for new user accounts, coordination of safety training, onboarding activities.
Lead Responsibilities:
Complex negotiation and oversight of large buy and hold vendor contracts, oversight of supply chain management, direct oversight of multiple lab spaces
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS?
BS or BA in Biology, Biochemistry or Bioengineering or similar + 2 years of experience as a lead.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired Experience:
Previous experience in a leadership role, with 2 years of prior laboratory research experience.
Mechanically inclined and willing to learn about large instrument function and maintenance.
Previous experience with lab management in a wet-lab setting
