Job Description
High Point University libraries include a main library and two satellite locations. Smith Library is the main library and occupies 56,000 square feet on four floors. The library has 20 staff members: six professional full-time librarians; seven paraprofessional full-time librarians; plus, part-time staff members. The University Librarian is a part of the faculty and has faculty status. This individual oversees library operations, including all collections, their access, and acquisitions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
- A PhD in Library Science or in a related field of study.
Experience and Training:
- Five years of experience in an academic library.
- Five years of management and supervisory experience in an academic library.
- Experience working with faculty in a research environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
- Strong management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate a strong service message.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the library and in the university community.
- Technology/computer skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directly supervises library employees, including hiring, firing, disciplining, scheduling, training, assigning work and ensuring completion of assigned responsibilities. Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating effectively with all stakeholders.
- Assures that the collection, both physical and virtual, supports the learning and research outcomes of the University community.
- Manages an information resources budget and exercises fiscal control to assure proper use of financial and personnel resources while assuring the campus community has the materials needed to be successful in their research endeavors.
- Establishes library objectives that mesh with the campus’s long-term goal for information services for students, staff, and faculty and develop these library goals while managing policies and programs that further their success.
- Works with the campus community to assure that the library is a safe, pleasant study and research environment for students and other members of the campus community.
- Advocates on behalf of the library with stakeholders, communicating the value of library resources and services in supporting the broader University mission, initiatives, and programs and regularly reports these findings to the University community.
- Helps develop and maintain employees’ professional growth and development by facilitating a culture of continuous learning and providing feedback and support on employees’ progress toward professional (or career) goals.
- Is aware of emerging trends and technologies that will impact the delivery of information resources on the campus of the future.
- Participates on university committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
