Overview:

Your ability to conduct routine and complex laboratory testing, interpret test results, perform instrument operation and maintenance, and support lab clients as they use services will be invaluable. You will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients at all levels – from neonatal to geriatric – as you apply your knowledge of anatomic, physiological and psychological processes. No matter which lab facility you are assigned to within the system, you will demonstrate an ability to comply with laboratory and safety policies.

Responsibilities:
Follow the laboratory’s procedure(s) for specimen collection, handling, and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test result.

Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (per department SOP’s).

Review and release test results.

Follow CAP, CLIA and other accreditation and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.

Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and all maintenance performed.

Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, correct the problems encountered or immediately notify the senior technologist or supervisor.

Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Follow department’s procedure in reporting STATS or critical results to clients.

If applicable, answer questions from customers or other lab personnel.

Maintain complete records of all testing performed onsite.

Maintain general appearance of the department.

Make sure regents/test kits have received dates, expiration, and if applicable opened dates.

Review/train on new procedures.

Attend monthly department and additional training/ educational meetings.

Participate in all applicable safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment.

Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

If needed, participate in government or regulatory agency inspections. Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Demonstrates knowledge of Computer Downtime Procedure.


Understands, for given job assignment, how to manage patient/specimen data when either the Order Communication (CIS, Epic) or Lab Information (Cerner) systems are unavailable for use.

Participate in education/training activities for new employees and students as directed by the laboratory manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:
Education:
For Medical Technologists hired after April 1, 2012, Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited institution is required.

Skills:
Must meet Testing Personnel qualifications for high complexity testing as defined per CLIA Regulations 493.1489 (see addendum for detail on CLIA Regulations, Sec. 493.1489). Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions required. Interpersonal and communication skills required.

Licensure:
Active ASCP or nationally recognized equivalent certification, as approved by Lab Administration, required. For Medical Technologists who obtained initial ASCP certification after January 1, 2004, participation in the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) is required. The CMP is also required for all active NCA certificants who are not ASCP certified prior to January 1, 2004.
