Two Graduate Research Assistant positions are available immediately in the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Division (VIDD) of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the Biostatics, Bioinformatics, and Epidemiology department. The Research Assistant positions will focus on helping to analyze Medicare and Medicaid claims data regarding the effect of intraoperative TEE
on patients' 30-day mortality rate and complications.
Previous research
(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0894731721000298 and
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/article-abstract/2788851) established the association between TEE and post-surgery clinical outcomes in CABG and valve surgery. Research also suggested some potential effect modification (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0735109721049305?via%3Dihub) of TEE. The primary goal of this project is to estimate useful individualized treatment rules that help clinicians make more informative decisions and better allocate limited echo resources. The current plan is to analyze the claims data using an instrumental variable approach (see, e.g., Cui and Tchetgen Tchetgen, 2022 JASA; Qiu et al., 2020 JASA; Pu and Zhang, 2021 JRSS-B). We may also have the opportunity to validate the estimated ITRs using a comprehensive disease registry database.

Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree (or pursuing one) in statistics/biostatistics, computer science, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, physics, computational biology, evolutionary biology or other fields
- Research experience in mathematical modeling of biological systems preferably in modeling infectious disease transmission and/or population dynamics
- Experience with reviewing/analyzing scientific literature is required.
- Familiar with R
- Experience with estimating individualized treatment rules
- Experience with instrumental variables
- Good communication/writing skills

The annual base salary range for this position is from $65,484 to $100,000 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
