About Us


The University System of Georgia (USG) is comprised of 26 higher education institutions as well as the University System Office (USO). Within the USO, our administrative operations are primarily housed in the Trinity Washington Building located in downtown Atlanta. Our Information Technology Services (ITS) division is located in Athens. The University System of Georgia Shared Services Center (SSC) is located in Sandersville. The Georgia Public Library System is located in Atlanta. The Georgia Archives is located in Morrow. The State of Georgia Records Center is located in Austell.

Job Summary


This is a professional position responsible for developing and implementing information technology strategies for the higher education system. This position diagnoses problems with existing information technology services and develops solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness. This position researches and identifies new technologies and closely works with department(s) on information technology deployments. The position responds and coordinates responses during critical service interruptions for constituent institutions. This position generally receives instruction and coordination of work from senior leadership in specific techniques or technical methods for accomplishing work assignments. This position may serve as project leader on special projects.

Responsibilities


1. Architects and maintains robust and reliable server, network, and cloud-based infrastructure.

2. Architects and maintains tools necessary for network operations.

3. Ensures that the network maintains sufficient capacity; implements strategies related to capacity expansion.

4. Architects and maintains configuration management system, monitoring platform, stats/trends, analysis platform, log service platform, and documentation platform for all systems, applications, and services.

5. Architects and maintains network infrastructure components.

6. Executes routine network administration tasks.

7. Diagnoses problems with existing services; develops solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

8. Researches and identifies new technologies.

9. Architects designs for new application implementations.

10. Evaluates and tests new versions of products and tools.

11. Works with program area staff to define long-term requirements and develops strategies to meet those requirements.

12. Writes documentation for procedures, requirements, etc.

13. Prepares reports and statistics as needed.

14. Designs and runs ad hoc custom solutions as required.

15. Attends training and professional development.

16. Monitors changes in technology and related regulations or laws and serves as an expert resource to IT staff and its customers on topics and issues related to technological innovations and developments.

17. Provides recommendations with regards to technical infrastructure, from hardware through software development.

18. Serves on, or leads, project teams in order to research and develop appropriate technologies which increase the effectiveness of Information Technology Services and its customers.

19. Provides training and advice to less-experienced staff; resolves complex and escalated problems and issues.

20. Works as a member of a 24 hour on-call rotation for network emergencies and outages.

21. Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications


  • Baccalaureate degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Over seven years of related experience required.

8. Knowledge of application protocols, advanced networking, and multi-tier application architecture.

9. Knowledge of Board of Regents policies and procedures.

10. Skill in collaborating with multiple constituents.

11. Skill in decision making and problem solving.

12. Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.

13. Skill in oral and written communication.

14. Ability to respond diplomatically to sensitive and critical issues.

15. Ability to effectively multi-task.
