Job Description:
The Apprentice role allows candidates to complete a surgical technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist ensures the operative procedure goes smoothly, efficiently, and complies with all safety processes and policies. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the OR team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Surgical Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of an instructor, preceptor, and Registered Nurse and reports to Surgical Operations management. The work experience is related to the Apprentice’s specific role and will support Intermountain Health’s mission, vision, and values.Intermountain Health Surgical Technology Apprenticeship through Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).
This job is for candidates that have completed the Salt Lake Community College Surgical Technologist prerequisite courses and have coordinated with Intermountain Health for the August 2023 class. This job application is only available for candidates that have been invited to apply.

What the apprentice is: You are paid to go to school. Intermountain will pay tuition at for the Surgical Technology program at SLCC. Paid internship for required clinical hours, Job placement at an Intermountain facility after school.
Requirements: High School diploma or GED equivalent, Complete prerequisite courses prior to the fall program (see Admissions | SLCC "Internship program"), 1-year commitment to work for Intermountain after the training, Student will pay for school supplies, uniforms & books.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidate must be accepted to either the Intermountain/SLCC apprenticeship program or the Intermountain Health Surgical Technology apprenticeship program and fulfill all pre-requisites specific to the program and Intermountain Health hiring requirements
Candidates must speak, read, and write in English
Intermountain Health caregivers must be in good performance standing upon acceptance to the apprenticeship program
Legally authorized to work in the United States
Candidate must have High School Diploma or GED
Job Essentials
Attends Intermountain Health and Apprenticeship Program orientations, and completes all required paperwork and documentation before starting apprenticeship
Attends scheduled departmental training, completes required training, and testing in a timely manner
Completes all mandatory training as assigned
Maintains good performance and attendance standing with Intermountain Health and apprenticeship program expectations
Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria
Maintains sterile field and safe environment
Under the direction of a preceptor, the apprentice prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures
Assists the surgical team during the procedure, within the scope of practice
After procedure, cleans room and prepares for next procedure in compliance with established protocol

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, sterile indicator tags, colors, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment and instruments with precision and accuracy. This includes computer use and typing for documentation, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
