The Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention is a new transdisciplinary institute that works to engage the breadth of expertise across the University of Michigan, with input from nonacademic stakeholders, to generate knowledge and advance solutions that will decrease firearm injury in the United States. The Institute fosters research that is mindful of the critical social and historical context of firearms in the U.S., and is inclusive and encourages diverse viewpoints, disciplinary perspectives, and approaches. The Institute also serves as a national hub for research that will drive new solutions to this public health crisis, and will train the next generation of leaders in the field. The Institute is supported by an organizational structure that provides internal oversight and external guidance, and focuses activities across four cores: 1) research, 2) education and training, 3) community outreach and translation, and 4) data and methods; and across six pillars: firearm-related suicide, firearm-related intimate partner violence, community violence, unintentional shootings, police shootings, and mass/school violence.
A Research Area Specialist is sought to work closely with the team at the Institute to develop, design, and conduct Institute projects and initiatives. Key initial activities include managing the development and maintenance of a new Institute grant-funded project; coordinating activities with partner organizations and subgrantees; providing oversight and project management for the evaluation of the grant opportunity; managing the development and implementation of a best practices guide for community violence interventions on a local scale; and providing oversight and management of multiple program evaluations.
The job functions of this role will include, but are not limited to:
? Develop, design, and conduct a variety of program evaluations of community violence prevention initiatives
? Review progress and evaluate results of community violence prevention initiatives and create and follow timelines
? Formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, recommend and implement solutions.
? Consult with community organizations and subgrantees to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research requirements, and collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.
? Develop protocol and criteria for subgrantee community violence prevention programs, and gather data, supervise data collection and verification, and conduct and provide oversight for literature reviews.
? Perform data analysis and interpretation of results.
? Draft language and content for best practices guide and other communications related to the grant
? Additional activities may include: Tracking and reporting on activities, preparing reports, planning and organizing events
? Master?s degree
? 1-3 years of experience (Associate level) or 4-5 years of related experience (Intermediate level) and/or research project coordination with a demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects to deadline
? Effective organization and management of multiple priorities in a complex environment
? Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
? Careful attention to detail
? Ability to both work independently and as a successful team member
? Experience with academic research enterprises including: externally sponsored research, research administration, and funding sources.
? Proven ability to lead large, cross-departmental programs and projects, building consensus across stakeholders and ensuring project requirements are met
? Demonstrated knowledge of firearm injury prevention is preferred, but not necessary.
This position may be filled at the level of 102907-Research Area Specialist Intermediate or 102905-Research Area Specialist Associate, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.
