Job Description
Ohio History Service Corps COMMUNITY SURVEYOR members serve in Columbus, Ohio; with substantial travel throughout Ohio, especially southern Ohio. They will survey historic properties to identify and record historic themes and buildings, focusing on the mid-20th century, historic properties managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and additional local survey priorities as appropriate for the 2023-2024 program service year. These properties will be added to the Ohio Historic Inventory database. Applicants preferably have a bachelor’s degree in history, architecture, architectural history, historic preservation, humanities, urban planning, or a related field. A working knowledge of architectural styles and terminology, Ohio history, educational and work or volunteer experience in historic preservation with knowledge of state and federal preservation programs is desirable. Research and writing experience required. Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products is required. Members will be full-time (35-40 hrs/wk) from September 13, 2023 to August 31, 2024. Members must complete a minimum of 1700 service hours (including 170 training hours) to successfully complete their service and to receive an education award. Members will receive training in volunteer management, meeting facilitation, project management and education program development, public history best practices, community mapping, historic preservation, heritage tourism/community-based economic development, leadership and team building, and non-profit administration. They will also attend one statewide conference, which can include the Heritage Ohio conference. They will be required to participate in National Days of Service and AmeriCorps Week.
Member Duties : Community Surveyor members are required to complete surveys of 100 historic properties to identify and record historic themes and buildings, focusing on the mid-20th century, historic properties associated with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in history, architecture, architectural history, historic preservation, humanities, urban planning, or a related field.
