The Framatome Fuel Design group is seeking a Fuel Mechanical Analysis Engineer in Lynchburg, VA. This highly motivated individual is needed to perform various mechanical analysis tasks in support of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) fuel designs and related components. Particular areas of work may include: static structural analyses, dynamic analyses for seismic and accident conditions, flow-induced vibration (FIV) and fretting wear assessments, and contribution in various R&D tasks associated with mechanical modelling. This position plays a key role in ensuring high quality products are delivered to customers on-time.


Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform mechanical and structural analysis of fuel assemblies and components, using engineering theory, analytical tools (e.g., finite element analysis), and testing to evaluate fuel assembly behavior under various conditions.
  • Perform and document calculations to support fuel licensing and development activities.
  • Establish mechanical test requirements and evaluate test data.
  • Develop and benchmark fuel assembly models with test data and perform seismic/LOCA (dynamic) or normal operating analyses.
  • Develop methods and computer codes necessary to support the development and validation of fuel mechanical performance.
  • Provide mechanical support for structural design and manufacturing issues.

All candidates must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for this opportunity:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering/Engineering Technology plus 0 -2 years of engineering experience. In applicable states a PE license will be accepted in lieu of a 4 year engineering degree

The following may be used to differentiate candidates who apply for this position:

  • Previous internship/co-op experience in field of study
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and analysis principals and application of those principles in design and analysis.
  • Strong background in mechanics of materials, solid mechanics, vibration (particularly flow-induced vibration and fretting wear), dynamics systems and finite element analysis.
  • Possess good written/verbal communication skills and personal interactive skills.
  • Aptitude for taking on new challenges and developing in new technical areas.
  • Under minimum immediate supervision, perform engineering tasks having varied levels of complexity.
  • Good organizational, time management and project management skills.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (e.g. ANSYS) to solve both linear and non-linear problems (static and dynamic).
  • Demonstrated aptitude with modern programming languages (e.g. Python).
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment, and achieve desired results through Project Technical Leader assignments.
  • Ability to quickly become familiar with and have a positive attitude in following required department procedures, processes, and application, while maintaining priority on production / quality / customer satisfaction.
  • Independently makes logical and technically defensible decisions and recommendations involving new, unusual and complex design challenges requiring a depth and breadth of knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Ability to effectively plan, direct, and complete highly complex tasks within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Knowledge of fluid-structure interaction, statistics, or fracture mechanics could help further differentiate candidates
  • Fluidity in either French or German languages could also further differentiate candidates

Our total rewards package

The range of base salary for the position is between $61,000 - $79,000, and may also include annual incentives, performance bonuses and benefits. Please note that the base salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location.
