The Opportunity

This position works out of our Irving, TX location in the Core Diagnostics Division. Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

This role will manage major R&D programs through system and product development and launch. Secure and justify funding. Exercise technical leadership in a multidisciplinary environment to expedite, manage and coordinate a multitude of interrelated activities within the constraints of limited resources and changing priorities.

What You’ll Work On

  • Conceive, plan and execute the R&D program to meet the strategic needs of the division.
  • Coordinate input from multiple areas and project managers on related projects or sub-projects.
  • Develop program specifications and objectives, strategies, timelines and milestones.
  • Identify resource requirements, costs and time schedules via the project funding process.
  • Develop an implementation plan: conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans to accommodate unforeseen events.
  • Lead the team through the translation of customer needs into project or program level specifications.
  • Develop alternatives to strategic business problems and recommend action plans that will address the business issues.
  • Anticipate future problems, resolve current issues, learn and adjust based on prior results and prior project leadership experience.
  • Recognize the implications of actions and proposals on the final project outcome, related systems and activities and general business strategy.
  • Prepares reports and presents progress to management.
  • Coaches and mentors team members on performance and development needs.
  • Direct the work of technical and support personnel, draw on technical expertise available both within and outside of Abbott.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of development systems and procedures. Has successfully led significant development projects from beginning to end
  • In-depth understanding of the technology involved in the product
  • Demonstrated technical skills a leadership judgment
  • Experience with product and business strategy development
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards related to the product
