OVERVIEW OF MEALS ON WHEELS AMERICA


Meals on Wheels America is the only national organization and network dedicated solely to ending senior hunger in America. Meals on Wheels America is the oldest and largest organization composed of and representing local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all fifty states and U.S. territories. More than 5,000 local Meals on Wheels Programs leverage a dedicated army of two million volunteers who day-in and day-out create an efficient and caring way to help America’s seniors stay independent, healthy and able to live in their own homes. This summer, Meals on Wheels America will host interns to add capacity and help fulfill our mission. All interns will be an integral part of the organization and will receive individualized attention and professional mentorship. They will be a part of the team during an important time of organizational growth and evolution and will have a hand in some of the major transition projects. All interns will meet bimonthly to discuss projects and share insights. At the end of the internship period, each intern will make a brief presentation to the entire staff about their experience and what they accomplished. Additional training and professional development opportunities will be made available throughout the internship.

Timing

The internship will begin in late May/early June. All interns are expected to commit a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 24 hours per week, depending on the internship design, for a period of 8 - 10 weeks. Business hours are 9am-5:30pm, Monday-Friday, Eastern time. The schedule will be flexible and will allow for time off as needed.

The Meals on Wheels America office is closed for renovations this summer so most work will be done in a hybrid work environment, working from home most of the time while occasionally working from temporary office accommodations at or near our office building at 1550 Crystal Drive, Arlington VA (accessible from the Crystal City Metro stop on the Blue and Yellow metro lines).


POSITION SUMMARY

This position will support the full Development team in various tasks including donor and prospect research, development operations, stewardship, data entry and record maintenance and will report to the Development Manager.


As a Meals on Wheels America Development Intern, you will gain valuable skills and professional development opportunities while working for a nationally recognized non-profit organization. You will have the chance to work alongside experienced development professionals, learn best practices in donor relations, and build your research, communication, and organizational skills. In this role, you will contribute to the mission of Meals on Wheels America by supporting revenue generation activities that enable the organization to support local Meals on Wheels programs and the seniors they serve.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work on a special project related to the creation, systemization, and organization of the internal resources of the department.
  • Support planning and communication for the annual Meals on Wheels Conference and Expo in August, including fielding questions and data entry pertaining to the events’ sponsors and exhibitors.
  • Complete research briefs for partner/donor prospects
  • Assist with donor data hygiene and other donor data-related projects
  • Support special projects and administrative tasks as needed

QUALIFICATIONS OR SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically SharePoint
  • Proficient in database management and research
  • Interest in non-profit development and fundraising
