Job Description

This position is located within commuting distance of BYU-Pathway headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City, working hybrid-remote (currently 1-3 days per week in the office). The incumbent will need to physically reside and perform the work assigned in Utah.

This position is to join the Institutional Research (IR) team that makes data visible to organizational decision-makers and their implementation teams. BYU-Pathway operates with more of a start-up feel than is perhaps common in higher education research, which leaves lots of room for innovation. Leadership looks to IR to get a quick understanding of the performance of initiatives, regular or real-time updates on key performance indicators, and consult forecasts of future performance.


  • Build and Maintain Dashboards and/or Recurring Surveys.
    • Assure the accuracy of data displayed on assorted BYU-Pathway reports.
    • Launch and maintain ongoing student surveys in Qualtrics.
  • Execute Research Projects
    • Work with stakeholders to identify research questions.
    • Develop research plans.
    • Conduct research using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. Methods should be tailored to the requirements of the research project.
    • Summarize and report research findings to stakeholders, BYU-Pathway executives, and external partners.
  • Respond to Ad Hoc Data Requests
    • Query and compile data for one-time requests.
    • Interact responsively and professionally with clients across the organization to develop and maintain relationships, prioritizing data requests based on the need for timeliness and the importance of the request to the organization.

Education : This position requires a bachelor's degree in data science, educational assessment, statistics, the social sciences, or a related field.

Work Experience: Experience with business intelligence reporting is the most immediately relevant work experience. Experiences in areas such as online education, researching underserved populations, managing labor market information, researching in international settings, or assessing learning outcomes may also be helpful.

Skill Set:

  • Build in Power BI quickly using Dataflows, Power Query, DAX, SQL, and/or R
  • Understand data structures and data engineering
  • Use advanced mathematic, statistical, and/or other data science skillsets to solve complicated problems
  • Display data in an intuitive and accessible way. Bonus points for an intuitive ability to do so beautifully
  • Project management

Reports to: Director of Institutional Research

Work Schedule: This is a full-time benefitted position. Remote work may be explored as a possibility, but the candidate must live in Utah or Idaho. Occasional travel will be necessary.
