Duties and Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Dean of Student Services and the clinical supervision of a Leeward CC and/or UHWO licensed mental health professional, assist in the planning and implementation of the AANAPISI grant, which includes:
Facilitating the building of a comprehensive, campus mental health outreach, prevention, education and wellness program at Leeward CC and UHWO. Perform campus needs assessments and develop/design prevention and education programming in order to increase the mental well-being of the campus community.
- Conducting workshops and trainings, via a variety of mediums/vehicles to a variety of campus audiences, regarding topics on wellness and safety.
- Facilitating and/or co-facilitating psychoeducational groups to support students’ mental health and educational success.
- Preparing and disseminating informational materials that help to promote mental health awareness, wellness and help-seeking.
- Developing and working with campus and community partners/stakeholders to help deliver outreach, prevention and education programming/services, and crisis intervention/management as needed.
- Performing crisis intervention when needed. Help to establish and follow campus protocols to ensure safety, appropriate/timely communication, documentation and follow up.
- Assisting with campus compliance and behavioral intervention team programming. Manage and coordinate information gathering, documentation, intervention, referral and follow up for student of concern cases as determined by Leeward CC’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). Coordinate with BIT members and others involved in the case as needed.
- Conducting initial intake interviews with students seeking care from campus mental health teams. Triage and refer to campus and community services as needed.
- Performing necessary charting and data collection/data recording requirements.
- Assisting in the development of any administrative infrastructures needed to support the operations of Leeward CC’s mental health services. This includes but is not limited to the establishment of procedures and protocols; forms and documents; databases and/or software and record-keeping systems.
- Assisting in the supervision and management of graduate-level interns.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Social Work (BSW), psychology, sociology, education, counseling, business or related field (e.g., marriage & family therapy, human services, public administration, family resources) and 3 years of progressive responsibilities in mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision; or equivalent education/training or experience.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with mental health/wellness prevention/education and/or service provision.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and word processing software.
- For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
- Experience in maintaining confidentiality of client records, in compliance with federal and state laws.
- Experience planning and conducting workshops and training on mental health topics common to a college campus to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge, competency, and sensitivity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented, underserved, and non-traditional populations.
- Working knowledge of community resources/services and eligibility requirements related to individuals with mental illness.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Desirable Qualifications
- Current mental health license in the State of Hawaii or is eligible for such a license within 24 months of the date of hire. Qualifying licenses include: Board Certified Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
- Demonstrated ability to provide triage and apply effective problem-solving skills in mental health emergencies.
- Experience working in an institution of higher education.
- Experience in individual and group mental health counseling, treatment and/or case management.
- Experience in working on multi-disciplinary teams. Skilled in team-building, conflict resolution and developing collaborative partnerships.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptive in a fast-paced, challenging and changing environment.
