Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking fora Senior Datacenter Telecom Engineer to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

As a Senior Datacenter Telecom Engineer, you will effectively and efficiently drive the design of all aspects of the physical networking infrastructure during design and address any design-related issues that arise during construction for all Microsoft datacenters/co-location facilities.

In addition, you will work with Datacenter Operations and partner on standards, requirements, and materials as specified; Lead design workgroups and drive cross-functional meetings for multiple, concurrent capital projects. This individual will be tasked to manage issues, decisions and risks, drive initiatives to improve the efficiency and quality to scale with the growth of Microsoft. As a critical thinker, the successful candidate will develop SOWs and design documents, then review and critically evaluate bids and options for physical telecommunication infrastructure (Layer 0) and optical cabling; and be able to evaluate operational impacts, deployment, and implementation challenges associated with design implementation for both Microsoft Owned facilities and Lease sites; technical lead on telecommunication requirements and master planning impacts for special, non-conforming projects, retrofits, refreshes, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provide datacenter Layer 0 telecommunications designs (Specifications, Drawings, Schedules and Bill of Materials) within CAD and/or Revit drawings and / or direction to firms for outside design work.
  • Collaboration with internal & external customers, lead project specific network technical delivery & oversee the delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete datacenter design solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules and budgets of the projects with a focus on facility telecommunications.
  • Collaboration with Global Technical Governance Team, Global Strategy Team and DCE Operations Team to utilize Base of Design documentation to create and/or oversee the creation of the datacenter telecommunication designs from basis of design (BOD) to issue for constructions (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of datacenter until handover for new DC project build-outs, leases, special projects and / or network upgrades.
  • Partner directly with cross organizational teams such as engineering design teams, delivery teams, operations teams, contractors and suppliers.
  • Provide guidance to staff augmentation A/Es.
  • Be highly organized and able to oversee concurrent projects and focus under pressure.
  • Exhibit structured thinking and logic with very strong analytical skills.
  • Work with a strong customer service focus, with the ability to communicate with highly technical management teams.
  • Creatively approach problem solving and ability to think out of the box.
  • Provide remote site support for construction teams.
  • Conduct site visits (in person or virtual as needed) to review all stages of the construction and ensure quality is being maintained.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 6+ years of large-scale facility networking infrastructure projects within datacenters or other comparable experience (healthcare, enterprise, large retail, critical environments, healthcare, government etc.) including design considerations of fiber strand counts of more than 288 single mode.
  • 1+ years working knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including BICSI Standards, TDMM, RUS Standards, ANSI/IEEE/IEC, NFPA, NEC, and building codes.
  • 1+ years of professional technical understanding of mission critical environments and the associated telecommunications facility considerations for Layer 0.
  • 1+ years of professional detailed understanding for structured cabling components.
  • 1+ years prior experience with Bluebeam.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer or equivalent per county of residence
  • BICSI RCDD or DCDC certified
  • Familiarity with ground-up construction, greenfield and brownfield site development requirements.
  • Action-oriented with a passion for getting things done quickly, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Ability to balance varying responsibilities that span rhythm of business, communications, executive management, and culture.
  • Prior experience with Visio
  • Experience with CAD programs such as AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects of varying timelines while managing project expectations.
  • Familiarity with high-level construction administration.

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
