HDR’s Movable Bridge program has evolved into an international practice that includes design not only of movable bridges but also of other heavy movable structures such as railroad car floats, locks, and dam infrastructure. HDR is seeking to hire a Movable Bridge Lead for the Illinois/Indiana area to be based in our Chicago/Rosemont, IL, or Indianapolis, IN, office.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with local business development leadership to identify, track and pursue local movable bridge opportunities.
  • Develop strategies for increasing market share within the Illinois and Indiana movable bridge industry.
  • Serve in technical and management roles on movable (lift, swing and bascule) bridge projects.
  • Work independently on projects and assist teams on other projects.
  • Coordinate and assign production of design calculations, drawings, estimates, and specifications produced by junior engineers and EITs administering general oversight as well as quality control review and detailed checking.
  • Conduct complex analysis in development of design options or recommendations.
  • Perform routine engineering assignments requiring the application of standard techniques and procedures.
  • Perform tasks including emergency repair response, field inspection, and writing of reports and scoping studies for design and construction support (approximately 15% of working time is anticipated in field work, which in some cases, will involve out of state travel).
  • Perform other duties as needed and in line with the candidate’s experience level including business development and mentoring other engineers.

Qualifications


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License or Structural Engineer (SE) License in Illinois or ability to obtain license in IL within a year.
  • 8 years of experience working in the movable bridge industry.
  • Experience working in a team environment providing leadership and mentorship.
  • Good communications skills and the demonstrated ability to work well in cooperative, team environments.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant in our employee-owned culture is a must.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-motivated and proactive mentality
  • Appreciation/aspiration for leadership on project teams, operations, and the industry community.
  • Experience delivering/pursuing projects with Chicago DOT, Illinois DOT and/or Indiana DOT.
  • Experience delivering/pursuing movable bridge projects with transit and freight railroads.
  • 12 years of experience working in the movable bridge industry.
  • Multiple Professional Engineer (PE) Licenses.
