The platform is designed to take advantage of the modern internet, to be programmable, and to support agile software development. Fastly's customers include many of the world's most prominent companies, including Vimeo, Pinterest, The New York Times, and GitHub.

We're building a more trustworthy Internet. Come join us.

Graduate Research Intern, WebAssembly

The WebAssembly team is responsible for developing, optimizing, and enhancing Fastly's core WebAssembly technology, which supports our Compute@Edge platform. We are looking for a PhD Summer Intern with an extensive understanding of WebAssembly technology, who is a fast learner, a proactive problem solver, and is passionate about solving challenging technical problems. This role gives you the opportunity to work closely with our WebAssembly engineers and researchers in the WebAssembly team and Office of the CTO and will be based in San Francisco, CA

What You'll Do

  • Analyze the performance of WebAssembly workloads, especially for interpreted languages, and propose new techniques to improve execution speed
  • Help to develop compiler tooling and developer-focused utilities to broaden the scope and applicability of the Wasm ecosystem and improve the performance and correctness of existing use-cases
  • Participate in discussions related to our VM runtime, compiler, language SDKs, and the Wasm standard, and ways in which we can improve each of them
  • Bring developments in programming-language, security, and compilers research to our production engineering practice where applicable and useful

Work Hours: This position will require you to be available during core business hours.

What We're Looking For

Basic Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a university doctorate-level graduate program
  • Fluency in the Rust programming language
  • Experience with compiler and/or program-analysis engineering
  • Familiarity with the WebAssembly standard and ecosystem
  • Ability to quickly become familiar with, develop and debug large software systems
  • Research experience in analysis and transformation of WebAssembly programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in profiling and performance-tuning large production systems
  • Experience with interpreted language virtual machines and familiarity with associated performance techniques
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate findings and recommendations to a broader audience of engineers

Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements

This position is based out of Fastly's San Francisco office. Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.

This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary

The estimated salary range for this position is $123,330 to $154,170.

Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly's equity and discretionary bonus programs.
