American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter.

  • Location: Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, North Island, San Diego, CA 92135.
  • Schedule: Part-time, upon request.

Job Overview:

The ASL Interpreter will be responsible for providing accurate verbatim ASL interpretation services to deaf or hard of hearing personnel at FRCSW. They will need to be able to provide services for meetings and other scheduled communications upon request. The interpreter must possess fluent ASL skills and be able to convey nuances, tone, and inflection to fully convey and receive messages. They should also be able to voice interpret and maintain confidentiality of personal sessions.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide accurate verbatim ASL interpreting services upon request to deaf or hard of hearing personnel using qualified ASL, for meetings and other scheduled communications.
  • Provide fluent communication between the interpreter and employees in both ASL and English.
  • Interpret phone calls; use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), Video Phone (VP) and other forms of specialized or computerized communications.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal sessions of a sensitive nature.
  • Interpreters shall participate in the RID Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) by completing 8.0 total continuing education units (CEUs).

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in ASL, with a minimum of three (3) years professional experience in ASL interpreting.
  • Possess the ability to convey nuances, tone information, inflection, and the spirit of both the speaker's voice and the Deaf or Hard of Hearing person's signs to fully convey and receive messages.
  • The ability to select, highlight and abstract with context when dealing with complicated concepts, idioms, etc.
  • The ability to keep pace with normal conversation in conferences, meetings, seminars, training courses, interviews, and public speaking events.
  • Proficient in sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign using ASL. The ability to voice interpret when a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person’s speech is not easily understood.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the use of English vocabulary, including the ability to read well and articulate clearly.
  • Certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID).
  • Current RID membership and a copy of the certificate shall be presented.
  • Maintain current RID membership by paying annual RID Certified Member dues.
